German chocolate frog lovers have been left to wonder why it is no longer available.
The frog was once so popular it was called the world champion chocolate frog in the US.
But it is now extinct, and scientists have told TechCrunch the frog had become a collector’s item.
“I think this is a really big loss for chocolate frog enthusiasts around the world,” said Jens Müller, founder of chocolate frog breeding company Kiehl’s.
Müller has spent the last year trying to raise money to keep the frog alive.
“We were able to raise around US$30,000 for the project,” he told TechBuzz.
“Unfortunately, we only have around five days to find an heir to the frog.
We hope we can do it in three months time.”
The frog is the first of its kind in the world.
It is a small amphibian that measures about 1cm long, with a small white head and a pink belly.
The amphibian lives in the wetlands of South Africa.
The frogs have been bred by Müller’s company Kiesler for the past seven years and he believes they are one of the best in the country.
“The frogs are very popular in South Africa,” Müller said.
“They have been breeding for seven years, so they are well-established.”
He said the frog breeding process was “quite successful”.
“The breeding process is quite a time-consuming and expensive affair,” he said.
Kiesler’s frog breeding program involves a number of breeding and releasing procedures.
They also use genetic testing to make sure they are not introducing unwanted pests and diseases into the frog’s environment.
Mueller has been breeding the frog for more than three years.
“When I first started the breeding program, we had six frogs in the reserve.
That was the maximum we could raise for breeding,” he explained.”
Then we started to see some other frog species come through and we decided to move on to another species.”
Kieslers frogs are the only known species of frogs that are native to South Africa, but Müller says there are more than 100 species of other amphibians.
“In South Africa there are a number more than 400 frogs,” he added.
“Our frogs are a bit of an anomaly, because they are quite rare.”
Müllers frog breeding has also helped to protect endangered species of crocodiles and sea turtles, including the famous Gaddis.
“For our Gaddises, it is one of their main food sources,” Müllers said.
“For example, if a crocodile eats a frog, it will eat all the frogs in their tank, and they will not have enough frogs to eat.”
The Gaddi’s are the world leaders in the number of frog species.
They are one-quarter the size of the American frog, and can reach more than 2 metres in length.
